Ruth Overton Lowery, 82, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and steadfast woman of faith, passed away peacefully at her home on November 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and closest friends.
Ruth was born into a life grounded in faith, family, and friendship — values that shaped every aspect of her 82 years. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, but above all, a faithful Christian who loved the Lord with all her heart.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Wallace Lowery; her children, Jeff (Candy) Lowery and Amanda (Dean) Matthews; her brother, J.D. (Linda) Overton; and her sisters, Frances Brown and Shirley Ayers. Ruth was also blessed with five grandchildren who were her greatest delight: Kylie Lowery, Katie Lowery, Davis Matthews, Charlie Matthews, and Alex Matthews.
Ruth grew up in the Belk community and attended Northside High School. After marrying Wallace, they made their home in Northport, where they built a life filled with love, laughter, and faith. Ruth dedicated her life to creating a warm and nurturing home for her family. Alongside her loving work as a homemaker, she also applied her talents as a skilled bookkeeper.
A breast cancer survivor, Ruth met every challenge in life with courage, grace, and unshakable faith. Her strength was matched only by her compassion for others.
Ruth was a talented seamstress in her younger years, crafting beautiful garments and gifts for those she loved. She found joy in tending her flowers and vegetable garden, playing Scrabble and Words With Friends (often to the playful protest of her family over her “creative” word choices), and spending time with her friends and church community. She cherished shopping trips, laughter-filled afternoons with her siblings, visits with her grandchildren, peaceful rides with her husband, and quiet moments in prayer. Above all, Ruth’s greatest joy came from serving God and sharing His love with others.
Ruth’s warmth, wit, and unwavering faith touched everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed, yet her love and light will continue to shine through the lives she touched.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Tabernacle Free Will Baptist Church family, the Ladies’ Sunday School Class, Dr. Ross Vaughn, DCH Home Health, and Hospice of West Alabama for their care, prayers, and kindness.
A funeral service will be held Friday, November 7, at Nelson Funeral Home, 3659 Hwy 171 North, Fayette, AL 35555. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Floral arrangements will be handled by Ellen’s in Fayette, AL. Memorial donations may be made in Ruth’s honor to Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
