Mr. Richard Ellis Nelson,age 70 of Fayette, passed away Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham.
A public viewing will be held on Saturday evening from 4-7P.M. at Nelson Funeral Home. By request of family, face masks will be required. A private funeral service will be Sunday, January 31, at Nelson Funeral Home. The funeral service is private but will be available on Facebook Live Sunday at 2:30-P.M. Burial will follow in the Fayette Memorial Gardens.
He was preceded in death by his father: D.D. Nelson and his mother: Ora Delle Nelson.
He is survived by his wife: Gearldine Guin Nelson, two daughters: Adrienne (Royce) Childers and Gretchen (Mark) LaForty, one son: Richard Jason (Christi) Nelson, 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and one brother: Ray (Regina) Nelson.
He was a member of Fayette First Baptist Church, a former church Training Union teacher and Sunday School teacher. He was a former Gideon and Lion's Club member.
He received his Mortuary Science Degree from Jefferson State College, as a Funeral Director/Embalmer. He served as Fayette County Coroner for 12 years. He was the owner of Nelson Funeral Home.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Anthony Childers, Matt Childers, Ryan Childers, and the staff of Nelson Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers will be: Royce Childers, Mark LaForty, Chris Childers, Samuel LaForty, David Nelson, and Hank Hendrix.
