Mellie Morrison Obituary

Mrs. Mellie Morrison age 98 of Fayette, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 26, 2022 at 3-P.M. from Nelson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Covin Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Billy Carl Sullivan will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-3 P.M. at the funeral home.

On Saturday, June 21st 1924, the first day of summer 98 years ago in Vernon, Alabama, the world became a warmer place upon the much anticipated arrival of Mellie Butler Morrison, the second daughter of Sammie Lee Woods and Obie Butler.

Mellie was born into the Greatest Generation five years prior to the onset of The Great Depression.  The timing of her arrival would have a great impact in shaping her lifelong values and frugal habits as she and her family lived off of the scarce resources of the land and livestock; picking cotton, milking cows, churning butter, and working in the fields.

During World War II, she and her now 99 year old sister Nellie met and married Morrison brothers Willie B. And Bernice Morrison.

Two years after the end of the war, Mellie welcomed her first and only daughter Linda Morrison Wallace (William Dee) and eventually two energetic and healthy boys, Laddie B. and Jerry David Morrison.

From the 1970s to the present, the Morrison family expanded to include four grandchildren; April Wallace, Heath Wallace (Beth), Dasha Morrison Porter (Caidee, Abby, and Jax), and Deah Morrison Hubbert (Jeremy, Skylar, Gavin, and Bella).

In the course of her adult life, she worked several years at Fayette Cotton Mill and as a chiropractic assistant for Dr. Bruce Perry.  She later went on to work for Robbie’s of Fayette as a seamstress and monogramming specialist before computers began doing this intricate work.

Mellie had a servant’s heart and spent her life volunteering care for others; cooking meals, visiting the sick, and caring for her four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was a lifelong member of Covin Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and mentored children including Clay Madison who became her lifelong friend; in addition to dear friends David and Barbara Patterson.

The family is extremely thankful for the gracious service of her team of caregivers that began with Cindy Byars,Kathy Thompson and Mary Jo Aycock, and was later led by Geri McCool, Lisa Aldridge, Deanne Graham, Sue McAteer, Judy Giles, Cindy Farley, and Mellie’s loving family.

Mellie was preceded in death by siblings Eulene Bobo (Hulon), Rebel Morrison (Dexter), James Earl Butler (Martha) and Joyce Lanette Butler.  She is survived by siblings Nellie Morrison (Bernice), Dalton Butler (Pat), and Richard Butler (Carol).

The family also wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Martha Jo Christian and staff and Hospice of Northwest Alabama for their extraordinary care.
