Laurene Finley

Mrs. Laurie Finley, age 83 of Fayette, died Friday, March 31, 2023 at her residence.

Mrs. Finley was born in Lake Wales, Florida on September 1, 1939 to Lauren Fraser Thomas and Anita Ward Thomas. She attended Florida State University, where she received her BS and MS degrees.

Her first job was at the University of Tennessee teaching Speech Pathology. She met her husband Jim at the University of Tennessee. They were married for 59 years. She worked at UAB while Jim was in Dental School. The had one son, Jim Finley, Jr.

She worked in the public schools in Fayette County for 33 years. She served on the DHR and Fayette Housing Authority Boards for many years.She was a member of Fayette First Baptist Church.

Laurie loved her family, her church, her students, her supper club. Most of all, she loved our Lord.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 2-P.M.  from Nelson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Fayette Memorial Gardens. Dr. Scott Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1-2 P.M. at the funeral home.

Survivors include her husband: Dr. James G. Finley of Fayette, and son: Jim Finley, Jr. of Fayette.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters: Elizabeth Thomas and Jennifer Thomas.

Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. Martha Jo Christian, Jim Walker Branyon, Jimmy Taylor, Bob Newman, Horace Berry, and Larry McGee.

Active pallbearers were: Dr. Gene Deal, John Cross, David Logan, Carlton Benton, Buddy Carroll, Rayford Newman, Don Bell, and Jimmy Campbell.
