John Howell Reed, age 89, of Athens, AL, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2023.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Nelson Funeral Home, 3659 Highway 171 N, Fayette, AL. Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Sulphur Springs Cemetery.
John was born in Conecuh County, Alabama on May 8, 1934. He grew up in Alabama, joined the Army for 3 years, and attended Welch College, where he met and married Ann Pitts. They were married for over 60 years. Over the course of 40 years, John was pastor of Main Street FWB Church in Amory, MS, First FWB Church in Sneads, FL, Pine Level FWB Church in Alma, GA, West Duplin FWB Church in Warsaw, NC, Lebanon FWB Church in Effingham, SC, Prospect FWB Church in Dunn, NC, Belk FWB Church in Belk, AL, and Sulphur Springs FWB Church in Northport, AL. He was also an administrator of West Duplin Christian Academy.
John had a love for Jesus, his wife, his daughters, his grandchildren, and great grand-children. He also enjoyed gardening and wood-working.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, three daughters - Kimberly Osborn (Danny), Melanie Blake (Sammy), Jennifer Walley (Trent), six grandchildren – Kyler Shelton (Peyton), Kelsey Brothers (Taylor), Kaitlin Viator, Keri Boyd (Andrew), Maggie Willis (James), Madeline Blake, four great-grandchildren – Luke Viator, Olive Viator, James Shelton, Ellis Brothers, two brothers – Phil Reed (Jean) and Louis Reed .
He is preceded in death by parents, Allen and Bessie Reed, and siblings, Jim Reed, Edith Hamil, and Oscar Reed.
