Dr. Harold Eugene Breitling, Jr., age 90 of Fayette, passed away December 21, 2021 at his residence.
Born in Demopolis Alabama on February 10, 1931. He graduated with honors in 1949 at Demopolis High School. After attending two years at Livingston (University of West Alabama), he transferred to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to obtain his undergraduate degree as preparatory to entering medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Tuscaloosa.
Upon receipt of his medical degree in 1957 he completed a one year internship at Caraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham followed by a one year residency in Internal Medicine.
Recruited by Dr. McNease of Fayette Alabama and following the completion of his residency program, he began a 50-year career of providing exceptional medical care to the communities that comprise Fayette County.
He was truly loved and respected by his patients in which many if not most became dear life long friends. He served over 30 years as a volunteer physician for the FCHS football program. He always enjoyed the opportunity to serve and provide medical care to the players. He was loyal and loving to all that he knew. He was exceedingly humble and rather disdained any praise directed at him. He always believed his medical service was his opportunity to pay it forward since he had once been a sickly child with asthma.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia Newton Breitling, daughter Melissa Breitling-Griffith (Wayne) of Memphis, TN. son Harold Breitling III (Casandra) of Pensacola, FL., three grandchildren (Amelia Breitling Glass, Alexander Breitling, and James Breitling Griffith), and two great grandchildren (Leah Glass and Gabriel Glass).
The family will hold a private service.
