Edward "O'Neal" Burkett Obituary

Mr. Edward "O'Neal" Burkett, age 89 of Bankston, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 12-Noon from Nelson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in New Liberty FWB Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11-12 P.M. at the funeral home. Bro. Junior Estes and Bro. Adam Smith will officiate. 

He was preceded in death by his wife: Brownie Burkett, and siblings: Aliene Burkett Guthrie, Opal B. Amerson Burton,  Harchelle Burkett (H.L.), Earl C. Burkett, Ellis Burkett, Leon Burkett, John D. Burkett (Gerrelene), Mary Faye Burkett, and Martha Mae Burkett.

Survivors include two sons: Stoney Burkett (Karen) of Fayette, Shea Burkett (Angel) of Bankston,4 grandchildren: Briana Smith, Brittany Howerton (Tyler), Codie Burkett, Brinly Burkett, and 2 great-grandchildren: Ashton Smith and Bexleigh Howerton.

Following his graduation from Hubbertville High School, Mr. Burkett enlisted in the United States Navy, serving a four-year term before reenlisting with the Seabees for an additional 17years.He carried the discipline, skill, and work ethic he developed during his service into his civilian career. Over the years, he worked in many roles, including as a welder for Pullman Standard, where he helped build boxcars, and for Drummond Coal Company at their Mill Creek strip mine until its closure. He later joined Wilson Machine, constructing pressurized tanks and traveling across multiple states to build water towers. Eventually, he returned to Drummond at their Shoal Creek mine, where he worked until his retirement.

Outside of his work, Mr. Burkett lived a rich and active life. He enjoyed trapping, bird hunting, coaching girls’ softball, riding his Harley, attending bluegrass festivals, and taking vacations with his wife and grandchildren. He was also known for his green thumb, especially his ability to grow tomatoes and a variety of vegetables, which he took joy in sharing generously throughout his community.
